Freeport Conservation Commission Meeting
January 9, 2018
Minutes

Attendees; Mike Stumbo, Andrew Arsenault, Barney Baker, and Guy Blanchard. Dimitra Voulgari, Theresa Oleksiw, and Maura Pillsbury were absent.

Minutes from the November 2017 meeting were not available.

Property reports;

Florida Lake – Mike to mark location of trees downed in October storm so that Donna Larson can request funding from Town Council to remove them.

Guy is preparing an application to the Maine Conservation Corps to finish bog bridge work (750 to 900 feet of bog bridge repair or construction and 300 feet of new trail) in June. Will ask Town if the work party can camp at Winslow Park.

Hedgehog Mtn. – Trees from October storm still blocking trail. Tom Ross finished photo to be used for plaque at summit. Looks good!

Hidden Pond – Barney walked the property with Conservation Trust. Identified new trail that avoids conflicts with abutting property owners. Need to bush hog a trail on the other side of the property. Combined, these two efforts will create a circular route.

The December meeting was a walk/tour at a property off of Flying Point Road. The property is being offered for sale to the Conservation Commission (or any other conservation/preservation organization) for preservation. The Conservation Commission thought it was a nice property but can’t find a compelling reason to advise the Town to buy the property for conservation.

There is an opportunity to look at a property that abuts Hedgehog that would connect to the Pine Tree Academy. Guy will follow up and schedule a property walk for the group in the spring.

There is an opportunity to have a State biologist present “Beginning with Habitat” at a future meeting. Positive response; Guy will schedule.

Need to review Conservation Commission ordinance and align with current practice.

Adjourned at 7:30

Next meeting – Tuesday, February 13, 2018 at 6:30 at Freeport Community Center.
