STATEMENT FROM THE TOWN COUNCIL CHAIR REGARDING KKK FLIERS DISTRIBUTED ON 1/30/17

January 31, 2017

Statement from the Town Council Chair Regarding the KKK Fliers:

Yesterday morning, some of Freeport's residents woke to find fliers from the KKK at the end of their driveway. While we recognize the right to free speech, this should not undermine Freeport's commitment to being an inclusive and kind community. Recently, the Freeport Town Council unanimously enacted Council Goals for 2017 which state the Council is committed to engaging our residents, and one another, in respectful, constructive dialogue about issues facing our community. The Goals also state that "Freeport is a wonderful place to live, work and visit, and has a reputation for inclusiveness and kindness." We know this to be true, even in light of yesterday's incident. Consistent with these principles, we will continue to work together with the Town and State officials to appropriately address this matter.
