  • The Town Clerk's office maintains and preserves vital records and issues certified copies. State law requires anyone seeking copies of these records to submit an appropriate application form, proof of relationship, and proof of identification. Requests for certified copies can be made online, in person, or by mail.

  • There is always an election on the First Tuesday after the first Monday of every November. Municipal elections are held at the same time as state elections in November. Special elections are set by the State Legislature, the Town Council, and RSU Number 5, as appropriate.

  • Residents may register to vote at the Town Clerk's Office in the Town Hall. On election day, you may register at the polls. Additionally, residents may register at the Motor Vehicle Department. Bring a photo ID with you. If your photo ID does not list Freeport as your current address, also bring one of the following: utility bill, current bank statement, government check, payroll stub, current year income tax return, current year hunting/fishing license, vehicle registration, lease or rent receipt.

  • All residents of the town vote at the High School gymnasium, located on Holbrook Street (which is off Main Street across from the Town Hall). Some special municipal elections may be held at Town Hall.

  • A firearms hunter safety course card must be presented when obtaining an adult firearm license for the first time (age 16 or older). If the hunter has not held an adult license since January 1, 1976, a firearm hunter safety course is required. An archery safety course card is required when obtaining an adult archery license for the first time. If the hunter has not held an adult license since January 1, 1980, an archery safety course is required. At the age of 70, a lifetime license may be purchased for a one-time fee of $8

  • Maine residents must apply in the town / city where they reside. The marriage intentions may be filled out in advance, but must be signed before a Notary Public or the Clerk issuing the license. The intentions form is available above under "Licences and Permits". Both parties must appear before the Town Clerk to sign the license before it may be issued. The parties must fill out forms in person at the Town Hall. If the parties reside in separate Maine towns, they may apply in either community. The license is valid for a period of 90 days from the date intentions are filed. The ceremony may be performed in any town or city in the State of Maine. Photo identification is required to obtain a marriage license, and the cost is $40. Out-of-state residents may apply in any Maine town/city. They may then have the marriage ceremony in any town/city in Maine. The license is valid for a period of 90 days from the date the intentions are filed. The Clerk's office strongly recommends that out-of-state residents obtain the marriage license in the town where the marriage will take place. If either party has previously been married, they must present the clerk with a certified copy of the divorce judgment ending the prior marriage or death certificate.

  • Vital Records are stored at the Town Hall. Certified copies of vital records may be purchased at the Town Clerk's Office. A photo ID and proof of relationship are now required by state law in order to purchase copies. The cost is $15 for the first copy purchased, and $6 for any additional copies purchased at the same time. (see the Vital Records section of this page for the application form.)

  • The Town Council consists of seven members, each of whom serve staggered three year terms. The RSU Number 5 Board has 6 Freeport members also serving staggered three year terms. These are elected officers. Nomination papers for these positions are available at the Town Clerk's office 100 days prior to election day.

  • The Town Council generally meets the first and third Tuesday of each month at the Town Hall at 7 pm The RSU Number 5 Board generally meets the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month at the Freeport High School at 6:30 pm

  • Applications are available at the Town Clerk's Office. The Appointments Committee (consisting of three members of the Town Council and Town Manager) reviews these applications when there is a vacancy to be filled on any of the Boards or Committees.

  • Commercial Shellfish Licenses are available only to those who have previously held a commercial license and have successfully completed the required conservation work. New license lotteries are held when new licenses become available. The cost is $230 for residents, $430 for non-residents, $55 for student residents, and $80 for student non-residents. Recreational Shellfish licenses are also available. They are effective July 1 through June 30. The license allows the harvest of one peck of clams per day for personal use only. Recreational digging is allowed in Wolfe Neck State Park without a license. The cost is $16 for residents and $27 for non-residents. Non-resident licenses are limited to 20 and are sold on a first-come, first-served basis beginning the first business day in June.

  • Dogs six months and older are required to be licensed. It’s the law. Online dog registration is available from October 15th to January 31st of each year. You may do this through the State Website. New dog licenses can also be obtained at the Town Clerk’s office during regular business hours. Please bring proof of the rabies vaccination and spay/neutering. The cost at town hall is $6 and $11, respectively. All dog licenses expire December 31st of each year. You may renew your dog license anytime between October 15th and January 31st. You must renew your dog license no later than January 31st of each year, or a late fee will be charged. The Town Clerk is not authorized to waive the late fee, as it is a State imposed fee.
