The Freeport Recycling Facility is a full-service facility that provides Freeport residents with safe, consistent, and environmentally friendly options for disposing of trash, recyclables, food waste, and bulky items. The Town of Freeport supports the Maine recycling Hierarchy – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Compost, Waste-to-Energy, and Landfill.

Before you throw something away, think of the three ‘R’s’ of Maine’s Solid Waste Management Hierarchy – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

  1. Reduce – The best way to deal with trash is to have less of it! Make conscious steps to reduce the amount of trash you throw away. Bring your reusable bags to the store with you, and choose durable, reusable products.
  2. Reuse – Reusing items saves money and energy. Consider reusing glass jars and plastic containers and donating still usable household goods and clothing toother people or to local organizations that accept donations of such items.
  3. Recycle – Recycled materials are used to make new products. Bring your rigid plastic containers, glass, newspapers, metal cans, and cardboard to the Freeport Recycling Facility on Hedgehog Mountain Road or to the silver bullet located on West Street (at the Public Safety Building lot). For a full list of acceptable materials, please refer to the list below or consult ecomaine’s Recyclopedia.

Composting Food Waste

One of the key pieces of a well-functioning solid waste system is removing food waste from the waste stream. Aside from the environmental benefits of composting, removing food waste from your regular household trash keeps trash bags lighter and free of unpleasant smells.

The Town of Freeport offers a few ways to dispose of food waste. Residents can bring food waste to the Transfer Station and dispose of it in the green totes. There are additional green food waste containers located behind the Public Safety building on West Street. The Town also sells Earth Machine backyard composters and rain barrels to residents. Check with staff about availability and pricing.

Waste-to-Energy

At ecomaine’s Portland facility, waste from Freeport is incinerated to produce energy and the ash is landfilled. Learn more on ecomaine’s website: Waste-to-Energy Plant - ecomaine.
